Tony

Training Status - STARTED SHEEPDOG.

Farm sheepdog for sale - Tony
Dog Name Tony
Date of Birth Dec 2009
Gender Male
Skill Level Started Dog
Potential Farm / Smallholding
Power Very Good
Temperament Excellent
Sheep Wk Yes
Flock Work Good Potential
Driving Not Yet
Suit Novice YES - Ideal
Reliability Excellent
Sensitivity Requires Patience
House Trained No
Lives Outside Yes

Tony's ideal for a family run smallholding.

He's an unusually marked but handsome, black and white, smooth coated dog with a good potential for work. He's faithful, very affectionate, and loves other dogs and people.

With care, he'll become a great worker and friend. He'll also make a wonderul family dog. He can catch a ball at a good distance, brings it back instantly, and hands it over with enthusiasm and pride! (Click image for larger version).

He has a keen appetite for work but can become unsure of himself if you try to send him on a long outrun (hence the very low price). He'll improve rapidly with experience and encouragement but we feel he'll be better suited to the small flock or smallholding rather than a large sheep farm.

Currently, Tony will do short outruns and gather sheep but needs one or two commands to get them fully under control. This is very easy as he has an excellent stop.

He flanks nicely and keeps sheep together quite well close at hand but needs more experience before he can do longer outruns. He will bring sheep along behind you, stopping instantly when commanded.

With patience and encouragement Tony will become an extremely useful dog but his sensitivity means he's not suitable for an impatient or bad tempered owner.

Tony works at an enthusiastic but steady pace. This makes him ideal for a beginner because it gives the novice time to think. He's not yet enthusiastic about walking on lead as he's only recently been lead trained. Tony has not been house trained but is exceptionally clean in his pen, so this should be no problem at all.

Connie - (ISDS 00/294740) Connie is now SOLD

border collie for sale - Connie
Dog Name Connie 00/294740
Date of Birth 3rd Nov 2007

Skill Level Started Dog
Potential Farm / Smallholding
Power Fair
Temperament Good
Sheep Wk Yes
Flock Work Good Potential

Connie's ISDS registered, classically marked, black & white, and rough coated. She a delightful young bitch with good potential for work.

She's faithful, very affectionate, and loves dogs and people. She does not play games, such as catching balls or retreiving but the right hands she'll become a valuable working asset and companion. She responds well to encouragement during training and is desperate to be with her owner. (Click images for larger versions).

Connie will be three years old on 3rd November 2010

border collie for sale - Connie

Her only drawback is that she's quite sensitive to cammands and therefore requires patience during training. With the right owner, she'll flourish and become a first rate sheepdog but if you're short tempered with a dog, don't even consider buying Connie.

If you put too much pressure on her, Connie will not run away but she'll gradually become less and less willing to work. If you see signs that she's not too keen to work, it's essential to take the pressure off immediately and give her as much encouragement as possible. She'll get the job done but it will take a little more time.

She works very well close to; flanking and stopping very well indeed. She'll sometimes cross over if sent off too far but practice and experience will cure this minor problem. Of particular benefit to beginners is Connie's steady and reliable pace when she's working. She allows the novice time to think and responds well when commanded.

Connie's Sire: Jim 257351 (R Edwards).
Connie's Dam: Belle 266735 (P Sabin).

Mog - (ISDS 00/303017) Mog is now SOLD

Training Status - STARTED SHEEPDOG.

border collie sheepdog for sale - Mog
Dog Name Mog 00/303017
Date of Birth 25th June 2009
Gender Female
Skill Level Started Dog
Potential Farm / Smallholding / Trials
Power Fair
Temperament Excellent
Sheep Wk Yes
Flock Work Good Potential
Driving Not Yet
Suit Novice YES - Ideal
Reliability Excellent
Sensitivity Good
House Trained No
Lives Outside Yes

This is a reluctant sale on our part. We bred Mog from Glen and Mel (our best sheepdogs) and we'll be sorry to see her go, but we need to reduce the number of dogs we have.

Mog is ISDS registered, classically marked, tri colour, and rough coated. She a delightful young bitch with good potential for work.

Mog's an absolute delight. She's obedient, affectionate, loves dogs and people, and apart from sheep work, she loves to play games. She'll catch almost anything you throw and reliably bring it back to you. (Click images for larger versions).

Mog was one year old on 25th June 2010

Mog can fetch the sheep from a fairly long distance but when working away from you, she still needs guidance as she'll sometimes cross over on her outrun and circle them. This is pure inexperience and very easily remedied by working the dog closer-to at first, then gradually increasing the distance over a period of time.

border collie for sale - Mog

Just at the moment, Mog lacks the confidence to face down aggressive sheep so it's better that she goes where she won't be challenged or where she can work with another dog. She's not afraid to push sheep up in a yard or pen though. Given further patient training, Mog's confidence will increase dramatically and she'll become a great asset to any shepherd or flock owner.

She works well close to; moving at a steady pace, flanking and stopping well. Her steady, predictable pace will allow a first time sheepdog handler time to think and control her.

Mog's Sire: Glen 238575 (A Nickless).
Mog's Dam: Mel 259090 (A Nickless).

Maeve - (ISDS 00/301458)

Training Status - STARTED SHEEPDOG.

border collie sheepdog for sale - Maeve
Dog Name Maeve 00/301458
Date of Birth 6th March 2009
Gender Female
Skill Level Started Dog
Potential Farm / Smallholding / Trials
Power Excellent
Temperament Excellent
Sheep Wk Yes
Flock Work Excellent Potential
Driving Not Yet
Suit Novice YES
Reliability Excellent
Sensitivity Quite headstrong
House Trained No
Lives Outside Yes

This is another reluctant sale for us. We bred Maeve from Glen and Maddie and we'd love to keep her but we have to reduce the number of dogs here.

Maeve is ISDS registered, classically marked, tri colour, and rough coated. She a delightful young bitch with personality and massive work drive.

Maeve has an excellent temperament, loves people and other dogs, and her work with sheep shows tremendous potential. She also loves to play hard and will jump to catch a ball or a spray of water. She also retreives reliably. (Click images for larger versions).

Maeve was one year old on 6th March 2010

Maeve has not had very much training to date but she's perfectly capable of getting the job done even if it's not too stylish. She shows great power with difficult sheep, flanks and stops well and can manage short outruns reliably although she'll sometimes cross over on her outrun if you send her too far. This is pure inexperience and very easily remedied by working the dog closer-to at first, then gradually increasing the distance over a period of time.

border collie for sale - Mog

She'd be ideally suited to a handler with some experience of sheepdog work because she works fairly quickly but if things are going wrong, Maeve will stop fairly easily, allowing the handler to gather their thoughts.

Maeve's price reflects her huge potential rather than her current working skill level but now that she's being trained regularly her skill will increase and you should expect her price to increase rapidly.

Maeve's Sire: Glen 238575 (A Nickless).
Maeve's Dam: Maddie 280769 (A Nickless).

Price: £1250.00 (GBP) - Call 01886 888917 or 0777 955 4560 - or use the contact form - (click).

How much does a sheepdog cost?

Prices of young started sheepdogs

To put an accurate price on a sheepdog can be very difficult. We try to be fair to ourselves and to the customer, so our price will reflect the dog's potential as well as its skill level at the time of valuation. Age can also make a big difference to the price of a sheepdog, with younger dogs generally valued higher than older ones.

Started Sheepdog Prices:
A started dog is exactly what the title says. It's not a highly trained dog, it's a dog that knows just the bare essentials of the job. The hardest part of its training has been done for you by an expert but there is still much to do and you should only buy a started dog if you are prepared to put in quite a lot of time to continue the dog's training.

Generally, a started dog will cost upwards of £800.00 (GBP).

For this, you should get a dog which will go around the sheep rather than through them, although this will happen only if you take the dog close to the sheep before you send it off. The dog may well be quite hard to stop, but in a young dog that can be a good thing (see below).

Prices of partly trained sheepdogs

Part Trained Sheepdog Prices:
What we call a part trained or intermediate dog is one that will do a medium outrun (say, 50 - 80 meters), and bring the sheep to you fairly reliably without having to be commanded too much. This gather may not be perfect by any means, but it should be practical and workmanlike. The dog should keep the sheep together and not circle or go through them unless commanded. It should stop fairly easily and be capable of flanking to either side whilst bringing the sheep towards the handler (rather than just following them).

A dog with this kind of skill level will normally cost upwards of £1500.00 (GBP) although a dog that shows really good potential can cost much more.

If you buy an intermediate dog you should be prepared to continue its training, although this will obviously be much easier than it will with a started dog.

Prices of fully trained sheepdogs

Fully Trained Sheepdog Prices:
What is a fully trained sheepdog? One person's part-trained dog is another's highly skilled animal. It all depends on the level of work you expect of your dog.

Many farmers, for instance have no need for their dog to be able to drive sheep, whereas others would see it as absolutely essential.

For our purposes, we would class a dog as fully trained if it had the following qualities when working on a small flock:

Expect to pay more than £2,000.00 (GBP) for a dog with these qualities.
