PUPPIES FOR SALE
We have puppies for sale to genuine working (or very active) homes
We have ISDS Registered and unregistered puppies for sale to suitable homes.
If you're looking for a working border collie puppy and you can offer it a working or very active home, we may be able to help you.
We regularly buy puppies from excellent parents as replacements for the dogs we train. Sometimes, we have too many pups, so we offer them for sale to good homes. We are very particular about the homes these pups go to, so Please read our Puppy FAQ page BEFORE you apply for a puppy.
The pups in this picture are not necessarily the ones for sale. (Click image to enlarge).
Our normal terms apply to puppies as well as adult dogs. If you buy one, you can return it (in the same state of health that it left here in) for a full refund within 30 days if you want to. You will also be entitled to a morning sheepdog training session with the dog once it's old enough to start working sheep. Prices from £350.

Make no mistake, Max is a 'tough cookie'. He's desperately keen to work sheep, and a really lovely chap - but sometimes, his enthusiasm gets the better of him. At times like this, he's prone to grab a mouthful of wool. Although he responds to verbal correction and will resume normal work again quite quickly, the trainer needs to be able to 'read' the signs and ideally, correct him before he grips.
Away from sheep, Max is a really nice dog to have around. He's well mannered and respectful, and he just loves people. Max would be an ideal companion as well as working dog. He can be a little bossy with other dogs, but that's to be expected from a young male of his nature. He doesn't seem to play interactive games with people, but he loves to play with toys.
Max obviously needs more training, but we are listing him here for those who like to take on a started dog. He normally flanks beautifully around the sheep at a steady pace although his stop is unreliable at the moment. His price reflects his potential, rather than his current skill level but expect to see this figure increase rapidly once Max learns to behave more responsibly around sheep.

Jen's a rough coated tri-colour bitch, born in April 2010 from trialling parents.
She has a strong work drive, a lovely, lively, friendly temperament and is keen to please. She shows power with sheep and a confident working pace, but stops quite easily. Jen certainly has the potential to be brought on further by an experienced, or keen novice, handler. Jen isn't a nervous dog, in fact, when working she'll take a surprising degree of pressure in her determination to get the job done - but she does need time to settle into a new home.
(Click either image to enlarge).
Jen knows her flanks and circles sheep nicely. She can stay out wide from the sheep in both directions but has plenty of confidence to push the sheep when required. She has the novice tendency to come in tight on her sheep sometimes, but responds to being sent out. Her short distance outrun is good in both directions and this, as with her work in general, will improve as she gains experience.
Away from sheep, Jen loves attention. She gets along well with other dogs and joins in with the fun, or will just settle quietly with a bone and let the world go by around her.
Jen's an attractive bitch with a pretty face, and will make a super working companion or more, depending on her handler. She's ISDS registered and fully vaccinated.

SHEBA
Sheba is now sold - and well into her 30-day trial
On first meeting, Sheba's apparent shyness belies her enthusiasm for her work.

Sheba is approaching 2 years old, from ISDS registered parents; a very pretty, nicely marked smooth coated tri-colour bitch.
Sheba is strong and determined with sheep, and shows great interest in cattle too (though we haven't tried her with them). She has a fast, confident working pace and enjoys her work.
She's already a useful dog, with the potential to be brought on further.
(Click either image to enlarge).
Sheba knows her flanks and circles sheep well with a short outrun to both sides. This, of course, will improve with regular work and as she gains experience.
When she's not working, Sheba's a likeable dog, fond of fuss from people she knows, but quite shy with strangers. However, on acquaintance Sheba grows in confidence and shows herself to be a dog who'd love to play and have fun. She simply needs to find a permanent home where she can settle and then, we're sure, she'll come into her own as a companion and worker. She's happy around other dogs, but will live quite happily on her own.
Sheba's a very nice bitch and we're confident that she'll make an excellent sheepdog given the right environment. Although shy, when working she'll take a surprising degree of pressure or correction when needed, but continue to work with energy and commitment. She shows no trace of aggression or sulleness whatsoever, and the longer she's here the better she becomes. Regular work and a single handler/carer will bring out the best in this stylish little dog.

Typical sheepdog prices | What's a started dog? | What's a part trained dog? | What's a fully trained dog?
How much does a sheepdog cost?
Sheepdog prices have rocketed recently, due to high demand created by improved lamb prices and demand from abroad. (We normally avoid selling dogs overseas).
To put an accurate price on a sheepdog can be very difficult. We try to be fair to ourselves and to the customer, so our price will reflect the dog's potential as well as its skill level at the time of valuation. Age can also make a big difference to the price of a sheepdog, with younger dogs generally valued higher than older ones.
Started Sheepdog Prices:
A started dog is exactly what the title says. It's not a highly trained dog, it's a dog that knows just the bare essentials of the job. The hardest part of its initial training has been done for you by an expert but there is still much to do. You should only buy a started dog if you are prepared to put in quite a lot of time to continue the dog's training.
Generally, a started dog will cost upwards of £1,000.00 (GBP).
For this, you should get a dog which can be encouraged to go around the sheep rather than through them, although this will happen only if you take the dog close to the sheep before you send it off. The dog may well be quite hard to stop, but in a young dog that can be a good thing because confidence is paramount.
You can ruin a young dog by putting too much pressure on it to stop.

Part Trained Sheepdog Prices:
What we call a part trained or intermediate dog is one that will do a medium outrun (say, 50 - 80 metres), and bring the sheep to you fairly reliably without having to be commanded too much. This gather may not be perfect by any means, but it should be practical and workmanlike. The dog should keep the sheep together and not circle or go through them unless commanded. It should stop fairly easily and be capable of flanking to either side whilst bringing the sheep towards the handler (rather than just following them).
A dog with this kind of skill level will normally cost upwards of £1600.00 (GBP) although a dog that shows really good potential can cost much more.
If you buy an intermediate dog you should be prepared to continue its training, although this will obviously be much easier than it will with a started dog.

Fully Trained Sheepdog Prices:
What is a fully trained sheepdog? One person's part-trained dog is another's highly skilled animal. It all depends on the level of work you expect of your dog.
Many farmers, for instance have no need for their dog to be able to drive sheep, whereas others would see it as absolutely essential.
For our purposes, we would class a dog as fully trained if it had the following qualities when working on a small flock:
- Good outrun - at least 200 metres. The dog should go out in a pear shape (not run straight to the hedge and follow it) widening out as it gets closer to the sheep, and then coming in behind the sheep to the point of balance. It should collect all the sheep it's been sent out to gather.
- Steady fetch - the dog should bring the sheep towards the handler in a steady fashion, using its own initiative to keep the sheep together without the need for many commands.
- Stop. The dog should have a good stop and know the difference between the need to actually stop and maybe just check its pace or slow down.
- Flanks. The dog should know its flanks and turn out squarely, keeping a constant distance between the sheep and itself whilst moving around them. The handler should be able to command the dog to widen out or come in closer if required.
- Driving. In our opinion, a fully trained sheepdog should be competent at driving the sheep for at least 100 metres. It should be easily controlled while driving and certainly not looking back at the handler as this is a sign of lack of confidence.
- Shedding and holding. The dog should be able to shed and hold sheep when required and have the confidence to push sheep up in a pen.
Expect to pay more than £2,500.00 (GBP) for a dog with these qualities.
